The shoulder season, from September through to November is a great time to visit, the cold temperatures of winter haven’t quite arrived yet, the roads are still passable and the darkest and clearest skies of autumn mean there is a chance of witnessing the spectacular northern lights. So you are craving some time away but need to watch the budget then Europe has plenty of affordable deals, particularly in Budapest. You don’t need to spend a lot when you arrive either, there are lots of cheaper hostels to stay in and you can easily spend your time simply taking in Budapest’s cool vibe by exploring the amazing architecture throughout the city and heading up to Fishermans Bastion for panoramic views over the city. Take a walking tour to get your dose of culture and history. Be sure to save your money for the thermal baths and then head to the Jewish quarter for a ruin pub crawl.

As well as relaxing and giving yourself some well deserved ‘you time’ there could also be an option here to build up on skills for your CV for the next season, take a little more time and complete a yoga teacher course.

Whether you’re a chef that desperately needs time away eating other peoples food or you want to treat your tastebuds then book a trip to one of the best foodie nations, Italy. Tuscany is a great destination for a trip all about food around autumn time, the weather cools down and its the season of olive harvest and truffle hunting. There’s also plenty of foodie festivals happening in October.
