Antonio Romano’s studio Hot Lab Design is the company name on everyone’s lips this week. Namely thanks to being featured as the highly-coveted front cover position on the Superyacht Times newspaper. We grab five minutes with him to talk about why Hot Lab Design is doing so well right now, and about future plans.
Time For A Q&A!
What’s hot with Hot Lab Design right now?
Actually we’re involved with 4 yachts now in construction, from 26m to 68m and all for private customers. We’re also collaborating with top-level shipyards such as Baglietto & Heesen Yachts- and in 2017 we will announce a new exciting collaboration.
Which yacht was your hottest project in 2016? Tell us why.
Definitely M/Y Ipanema, a 50m full custom yacht built by Mondomarine. We were responsible for the interior and the exterior lines and for us was the biggest yacht to hit the water. She was also one of the stars of the last edition of the Monaco Yacht Show- it was not easy to forget her bright red hull colour and sexy lines!
Which design trends do you think will be hot in 2017? Explain.
Difficult to say, we’re always involved in full custom projects and each time we approach them with different styles and solutions. For sure the use of glass elements is important, and the various possibilities of “opening” the yacht structure in order to have more direct contact with the sea. These elements will always be a ‘Must-Have’ on board…
What superyacht feature transforms a design from ‘lukewarm’ to hot?
Sometimes it’s simply a lucky shot, but most often a mix of features with some well studied “wow points” can help a yacht to become a timeless and iconic vessel.
What would be the hottest charter destination for a Hot Lab yacht to travel to?
Personally, I love Antigua and the Caribbean in general, and now Cuba is open also for the charter market I’m pretty sure that will become soon one of the hottest places to be.
Who is the hottest person in the Hot Lab office?
Me 🙂 (kidding of course…)
What is the hottest car in the Hot Lab car park?
An old MINI Cooper from 1968 and a Vespa 50 Special from 1970, we’re old romantics 😉
How many years has Hot Lab been running? How was it founded?
Hot Lab was founded by me and my two partners Enrico Lumini and Michele Dragoni in 2004 in Milan- in 12 years we’ve done a lot of nice projects and we’re proud of what we’ve created, but I’m sure that the best part is still to come…
Which year was hottest overall in Hot Lab’s history? Why?
The next one, we always think to the future in a positive way!
What is the hottest thing due to happen at Hot Lab in the next 5 years?
We expect to launch our biggest ever project, M/Y Days 68m, in 2018 and we also are very excited about our new collaboration (still top secret). The aim is to start soon the construction of a 70m+ yacht, and I hope that sooner or later we can finally reach this goal.
