Once popular with only hard-core sailing types, today the islands of Croatia are teeming with stars and moguls in the summer months on their mammoth yachts. When you’re sitting in the perfect anchorage, feasting on freshly caught lobsters after a morning snorkelling, you have to agree that Croatia has truly established itself as one of the top superyacht cruising destinations on the planet.
Premium Superyacht Refit In Croatia
Lesser known are the superyacht refit and repair facilities in the country- who are checking under the hood and sprucing up these beautiful yachts for the summer cruising season. Our sources tell us a new MY Anna is currently in build in Holland, so we thought we’d look back at the at the current MY Anna (Feadship, 2007) who spent three winter periods with CAPAX Marine Engineering in Croatia for refit and maintenance.
At 67m, MY Anna is as much of a beauty today as when she was fresh out of the yard. And this is also thanks of course to her excellent maintenance along the way courtesy of her professional yacht crew.
Mario Baljkas, the project manager for MY Anna told us:
“We performed a variety of specialist works on her at the SCT Shipyard – 3 dry dock periods over 5 years – for the maintenance of her teak, marble and some stainless steel parts, including a modification of a complete hot water pipeline in the engine room. We installed a pneumatic golf platform on the deck. We also had a very special request for her prized piano and brought on a world famous master tuner from the Croatian National Concert Hall to help us with that.”
Getting Ready For The Charter Season
This doesn’t surprise us. We got to know Capax a few years back via Ian Robertson, captain of MY JO who introduced us to Teo Petricevic, Managing Director of the company.
He remarked:
“You must get to know Teo. We went into refit and had three consecutive charter seasons back to back without a hitch. They brought on an expert marble tradesman who was so precise in his work that I had to finally tell him to relax a bit… the general level of technicians they brought onboard during our superyacht refit in Croatia were exceptional.”
So off we went to meet Teo in Sibenik, who besides being one of the nicest guys in the industry also knows how to pick a great restaurant.
Without a lot of fuss or fanfare, Capax is carefully taking care of these yachts in an area that isn’t particularly known for winter refit.
“If you can just imagine in 2008 Croatia still was not in the EU, but this completely new business was growing so fast and the superyachts were flocking here. There was a tremendous amount of growth and we’ve worked hard to meet the expectations of the superyacht industry’s high level of service. Every project is a challenge, but we have a fantastic team and their loyalty, professionalism and willingness to go the extra mile is really the key to our success.”
