We all know how demanding life on deck is – which is why your sleep matters. In this article, we cover the importance of sleep and how to make the most out of your break to power you through your charter!

why sleep matters

Why Getting Some Shut-Eye Is So Important

Sleep is crucial for physical well-being and is the ultimate way to combat fatigue. When you’re sleeping, the brain signals the release of hormones and vital compounds. Benefits include:

  • increasing your ability to gain new insight into complex problems by 50%
  • good skin health
  • healthy cell division
  • better athletic performance
  • improved stress management

Typically, adults should aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night to avoid negative impacts on health.

How To Prepare For A Great Night’s Sleep

1. Reduce that screen time

While we might like to chill out and scroll through social media after a long day – but it’s not the healthiest thing to do for a long time! Limit your screen time and put on that ‘eye comfort shield’ phone setting. Instead, try reading a book or listening to music.

2. Eat healthily and limit water before bed

Drinking plenty of water during the day is a great thing but try and limit your water intake before bedtime – you don’t want to get up in the night for the bathroom or just as you’re starting to drift off!

3. Limit caffeine

This is a no-brainer! After consumption, caffeine can stay in your bloodstream for up to 8 hours, stimulating your nervous system. Try not to have coffee in the afternoon.

4. Make your cabin a sanctuary

You’ll appreciate a calm environment as you clock off. Reduce lighting, keep your devices turned off (or on silent), and keep your cabin clean and tidy.

5. Keep fit – with hours to spare

Aim to exercise a few hours before you go to bed! While exercise is great for you, it releases stimulating hormones which could keep you awake.
