Swiss-based designer Kurt Merki Jr, has released the initial renders for his latest 86.5-metre superyacht concept which is being unveiled at Monaco Yacht Show 2024.

Another addition to a series of groundbreaking projects

Named Zeitgeist, the concept marks the continuation of groundbreaking projects presented by the designer, following on from 80-metre Symbiosis that won the design et al International Yachts & Aviation Awards 2024 for “Best Yacht Interior Design Concept”.

Designed with the “next-generation yacht owner” in mind, Zeitgeist’s eco-minded features include three wind turbines and more than 800m2 solar roofing as alternative power sources for supplementing the onboard energy resources.

The layout

The external layout is characterised by large, open, and multi-functional spaces.  One example of this unexpected layout is a landing pad on the bow specifically designed for e-VTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) crafts.  Elsewhere, an expansive dining terrace with seating for 12, pool deck with 10-metre infinity pool and beach club aft place a focus on al fresco living.

An innovative upper deck houses the solar roof that not only generates energy but also serves as a shade for the hidden sky deck, protecting it from the elements. The lower deck has a fully automated 20m2 vertical nursery where the chef can grow herbs and vegetables. In terms of accommodation, her owner’s suite offers an 80m2 shaded owners terrace, while five guest suites guarantee comfort and privacy for all guests.

Energy & sustainability

The concept takes a significant stride towards reducing a superyacht’s energy needs. According to Kurt Merki Jr, CEO and head designer at Studio KMJ GmbH:

“We named our concept Zeitgeist to reflect next-generation yacht owners who realise the importance of reducing their impact on the environment now and for future generations.”

Showcasing the capacities of Kurt Merki Jr in every respect, project partners among others include Esthec for alternative bio-based decking, GREENBOATS for natural fibre composites, Dade Design who invented CO2 neutral concrete furniture by adding plant-based carbon into the concrete, Desserto for highly sustainable plant-based material as an alternative to leather made from cactus and Michael Köhler (former owner of Silent Yachts) who provided consultation for solar technology and overall development.

Thanks to a series of eco-conscious design elements, Zeitgeist represents the perfect combination of form and function, combining modern technologies and cutting-edge materials that make the onboard experience truly unique for guests.
