In the superyacht world, we all know that anything can happen. That’s why crew safety is so important. And so is a robust safety culture that not only reduces accidents and incidents but also saves time, money, and helps retain skilled crew members. The FATHOM app is revolutionising how superyacht crew manage and understand onboard safety.

An indispensable tool for you and your yacht.

The FATHOM App: What Is It About?

The FATHOM app is an innovative, app-based familiarisation system that continuously tests crew knowledge of their specific vessel’s safety information and procedures. This approach promotes a proactive safety culture by ensuring that all crew members, from junior to senior, are consistently familiar with the critical safety aspects of their vessel.

Making senior crew’s lives easier

By integrating the FATHOM app into your superyacht’s operations, you can significantly reduce the pressure on senior crew members. Traditionally, they bear the burden of ensuring that new and existing crew are up to speed with safety protocols. The app provides monthly reports that inform drills and training. Additionally, the dashboard provides essential information, further streamlining the familiarization process and ensuring that every crew member is fully prepared for any situation.

Easy to keep track of knowledge

This is incredibly helpful when it comes to safety meetings. By using these reports, you can keep track of everyone’s progress, identify knowledge gaps, and understand the areas in which you all can improve.

“The Fathom app has proven to be a very useful onboard tool. Not only does it help familiarise new crew with the physical location of key safety equipment when joining a vessel, but it also keeps pertinent safety related information from the SMM and SOP’s fresh in the memory of long-standing crew members like myself. We use the Fathom monthly report during safety meetings to identify areas where further onboard training is required”.

Consistent, Customisable Testing

One of the standout features of the FATHOM app is its ability to tailor safety training to the specific needs of your vessel.

The app generates multiple-choice questions based on your vessel’s existing ISM (International Safety Management) and SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) manuals, as well as the Fire Safety Plan.

Helping crew understand all things safety

These questions are designed to help crew members understand safety procedures as well as the specific equipment and systems onboard. The app can be customised to include additional questions that reflect new policies, equipment, or incidents that have occurred.

Not just theory – actual applicable knowledge

The app also goes beyond traditional testing. It incorporates physical familiarisation through programmable tags attached to critical vessel equipment.

Crew members are regularly tasked with locating safety equipment around the vessel, demonstrating their knowledge of what the equipment is, where it’s located, and how to access it. In the app’s “Revise” section, crew members can scan any tag, which will automatically display any questions associated with that specific tag. It will also show related documents, such as operational instructions.

Being constantly tested on equipment location and maintaining vessel familiarity, could save vital minutes when reacting to a fire or man overboard situation.

Benefits To The Vessel & Crew

Implementing the FATHOM app onboard offers numerous benefits:

  • Enhanced Safety: Regular, measurable familiarisation increases safety by ensuring that all crew members are knowledgeable and confident in their abilities.
  • Asset Protection: By reducing the risk of injury and damage to equipment, the app helps protect the owner’s asset and increases the vessel’s availability.
  • Crew Confidence: Crew members gain confidence in their abilities and those of their colleagues, fostering a more cohesive and capable team.
  • Career Development: The app prepares crew members for advancement by providing a deep understanding of the vessel’s systems and processes.

The app’s dashboard allows management to monitor crew participation and performance, highlighting areas where additional training might be needed. This capability is invaluable for pinpointing gaps in knowledge. This ensures that every crew member is fully prepared to handle emergencies.

“Döhle Yachts has been using the Fathom App for shoreside staff for a year and we have witnessed fantastic results utilising the service. The ability to push customised questions, refresh our staff, and accurately monitor any weaknesses requiring focus has been instrumental to our continuous improvements to the safety management skills of our personnel ashore, as required by the ISM Code.

We ensure that all staff are fully aware of the content of fleet and shoreside manuals which make up our safety management system; we get to prove to external authorities that we have improved our knowledge and understanding of rules, regulations, and the development of the SMS.

It has been a delight to watch our shoreside staff explore the app, improve their knowledge, and achieve impressive results.  The App truly and measurably makes each member of staff more knowledgeable, resourceful, and reliable with their respective role.  It is an asset to our company to ensure safety management and environmental protection.”

Just Getting Started? Simple.

The basic installation of the FATHOM app is straightforward. It utilises your vessel’s existing SMS (Safety Management System) and SOLAS training manuals, along with the General Arrangement (GA) and Fire and Safety Plan. From these documents, a bank of around 120 questions is created, which is then incorporated into the app-based testing module.

Approximately 50 pieces of equipment are selected for physical familiarisation, with program tags attached to each. These tags are easily scanned with crew members’ mobile phones, making the system both accessible and user-friendly.
