Superyacht Content introduces Cocktail Class, our monthly exploration of a choice cocktail, its history, and different ways of making it. This month, we’re focusing on classic Piña Coladas…

Origins

The Piña Colada, a tropical delight, originated in Puerto Rico.

Translating to “Strained pineapple,” its name perfectly captures the essence of this fruity concoction. The cocktail’s creation dates back to the 1950s, and the Piña Colada quickly became a symbol of Caribbean leisure, earning its place as the national drink of Puerto Rico in 1978.

Classic Piña Colada Recipe

As many classic cocktails have over the years, the Piña Colada has been given endless twists and techniques. Purists will be making it one of two ways: the International Bartenders Association way, or the San Juan Puerto Rico way.

A traditional Piña Colada blends three primary ingredients:

  • 1 part white rum
  • 1 part coconut cream
  • 3 parts pineapple juice

Either mix with crushed ice in a blender until smooth. Next, pour into a chilled glass, or pour over ice in a cocktail glass, unblended. For a frozen version, mix the juice, rum and coconut cream together. Freeze in ice cube trays. Then whiz the frozen cubes (with a couple of ice cubes if you like) to a slushy consistency. Adjust the sweetness and creaminess to your taste by tweaking the amounts of coconut cream and pineapple juice.

The latter requires:

  • 30ml heavy cream
  • 180ml freshly pressed pineapple juice
  • 30ml cream of coconut
  • 60ml rum (any style, preferably white)
  • 1/2 cup crushed ice

To make a classic Piña Colada, blend these ingredients with ice until smooth and frothy. Serve it in a chilled glass, garnished with a pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry for the perfect tropical touch.
