In response to the shortage of engineering skills in the maritime sector, UKSA is introducing an Engineering Crew training course. This program is designed for both experienced and aspiring crew members who aim to work on small boats or enter the superyacht industry through the engineering pathway. Read on for more about it!
About The Course
The course is for experienced or new crew who wish to work on small vessels, or enter the superyacht industry through the engineering route.
The 5-week UKSA engineering course trains students in professional workshop practices, correct and safe use of tools and workshop equipment. In addition, it delivers the MCA Approved Engine Course 1 and 2, STCW basic safety training and Powerboat training. Finally, students will complete the Mental Health for Seafarers course which prepares them for the challenges of life at sea.
Delivered by UKSA’s instructors, the Engineering Crew training course takes place at their Cowes headquarters on the Isle of Wight. This inclusive offering encompasses accommodation, daily freshly prepared meals, personalised mentoring, access to a dedicated careers course manager, use of the on-site swimming pool, and full gym access.

The course is suited for individuals with some engineering background seeking to transition these skills into the maritime sector. It is ideally tailored for hands-on, highly motivated individuals with a foundational understanding of engines and tool usage, aspiring to be part of a crew navigating challenging environments globally.
Upon successful completion, participants receive various qualifications, including:
- the UKSA Superyacht Crew Training Certificate
- MCA AEC1, MCA AEC2, MCA Workshop Skills Training
- STCW Basic Safety Training
- MCA Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
- Mental Health for Seafarers, along with several RYA certifications
These qualifications are not only relevant to the superyacht industry but are also transferable across various sectors, such as workboats, tugboats, standby vessels, seismic survey vessels, oceanographic research vessels, government patrol vessels, and fishing boats.
