Last month, we brought you news from The Crew Network (TCN) and Fraser of a short story competition. The deadline for entry has now closed, the judges have been busy reading by their firesides and now, the winners have been revealed!
The competition’s theme was ‘When Life is your Short Story’ and the judging panel were inundated with stories from authors of many nationalities recounting tales of romance, drama, laugh-out-loud comedy and a number of very touching and personal anecdotes. Every single story, in its own way, reflected a little of what life is really like when working aboard a superyacht.
The judging panel comprised: Marika Taishoff – Director of the MBA Program at the International University of Monaco; Mark Duncan – Director of Marketing & Business Development, Fraser; Alessandro d’Angelo – Crewing Manager (Viareggio & Palma) & Business Development Worldwide for TCN; Anna Kuylenstierna – Crewing Consultant (Palma) TCN and Louise Cailbourdin – Crewing Manager (Antibes) TCN.
In third place came Georgia Rex with her piece ‘Dear Diary‘. Transported from her daily London life to decorating trees in Mexico and her first taste of Wagyu, Georgia can’t quite believe the life she is enjoying today. Georgia’s story appealed to the judges because of its energy and character, honest insight and intrigue that left the reader wanting to know more.
Second place went to Stephen Crosthwaite for his story ‘Birthday Cake‘. Based on a true story and using a little artistic licence, Stephen recounted the experiences of a steward working aboard a superyacht. The judges were enthralled by the humorous tale and the funny incident was extremely well written.
Taking the trophy and first place title, is Stephen Wilkins with ‘Wave Splashes to Ashes‘. The judges praised Stephen for his ability to establish a strong emotional connection between the characters, and gain the reader’s own emotional investment in the story.
The winners received an array of goodies, including a year’s subscription to video channel Masterclass, a copy of Smart Yacht Marketing 101, Ecostore cleaning products, a Leatherman multi-tool and Fraser insulated water bottles.
